Seven outstanding restaurants near Preston Hollow real estate

R+D Kitchen

8300 Preston Center Plaza Drive, in the Plaza at Preston Center

Holding court among the upscale boutiques of the Plaza at Preston Center, R+D Kitchen is a long-term favorite of Preston Hollow, Park Cities, and North Dallas residents. Since first opening in 2007, R+D has impressed diners with a relaxed atmosphere and fresh, flavor-filled plates. The whole vibe is sophisticated coastal California cool; the dress code is upscale comfort. The other three R+D Kitchen establishments are in Newport Beach, Santa Monica, and California wine country, so it’s unsurprising the vibe is Californian.

The menu bounces from a well-curated selection of sushi rolls to sandwiches and entrée level salads to a wonderful collection of main entrées. You can decide between dishes of rotisserie, Italian, fresh roasted salmon, meatloaf, or a prime center-cut filet rivaling most steakhouse offerings. Because R+D focuses on consistent quality instead of a particular specialization, there is never a lousy plate, regardless of your order.

Jia Asian Bistro

8411 Preston Road, in Preston Center

Authenticity is a crucial ingredient for restaurants trading in international fare. It's particularly true of Chinese food, which is often Americanized to satisfy palettes accustomed to salt, sugar, and sauce. Head to Preston Center to try Jia Asian Bistro. Helmed by Jia Huang, who perfected her food and hospitality skills at Lombardi Family Concepts, Jia Asian Bistro aims to fill the void in Dallas for truly authentic upscale Chinese cuisine.

The menu at Jia's is considerably lighter fare than your typical Asian bistro. Staples such as spring and egg rolls, General Tso's Chicken, Szechuan Beef, and Kung Pao Shrimp are front and center on the menu. But their preparation is far more thoughtful, with lots of flavors packed in. There's also a menu with an excellent selection of sushi, sashimi, and classic and signature rolls. In addition to the main dining area, Jia’s features the second-floor cocktail and small bites lounge.

Montlake Cut

8220 Westchester Drive, in Preston Center

Though good seafood is hard to come by in Dallas, that hasn't stopped a generation of local restaurateurs from attempting to establish the city's primary Gulf, Atlantic, or Pacific sourced eatery of record. Nick Badovinus of Neighborhood Services and Off-Site Kitchen fame comes close with Preston Center's Montlake Cut.

Reflective of Mr. Badovinus' Washington-state roots, Montlake Cut is an ode to the Pacific Northwest's sea-faring culture. The atmosphere is similar to an extremely quirky ship sailing from Lake Washington into Puget Sound. It's fun and relaxed, not unlike the most popular seaside dives, colorful and casual. The menu, however, is the real draw. It's a straightforward affair, sourced from both coasts and the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike some purported Dallas seafood eateries, the menu features actual fish and crustaceans, including a raw bar, market-ready fish, and small and large seafood plates.

Rex's Seafood Market

6713 Northwest Highway

Whereas Montlake Cut positions itself as the best seafood restaurant in Dallas, Rex's Seafood Market is happy to be your go-to establishment for fresh, flown-in daily surf fare. Few places in North Texas rival Rex's take-home fare (they also have a location in the Dallas Farmers Market) with upwards of ten or more fish varieties and five to seven types of shellfish on hand. Updated daily, the market side promises the freshest possible catch of the day.

The Northwest Highway location tucks into a basic strip mall with a nicely appointed, relaxed interior that might seem a bit out of place in between a chiropractor's office and dry cleaners. The lunch counter and casual setup of tables and booths throughout invite you to sample Rex's prepared menu, which is excellent in its own right. Scottish salmon, red snapper, Chilean seabass, crab pasta, and even a simple fried shrimp basket are expertly prepared. There's even an option for a New England-style lobster roll or the Connecticut version.

Suze

4343 West Northwest Highway

Another favorite in Dallas is the exquisite, Mediterranean-focused, though fairly eclectic, Suze Restaurant. Sharing a parking lot with a Central Market at the corner of Northwest Highway and Midway Road in Preston Hollow, Suze is often recognized as a top Dallas neighborhood eatery. Suze eschews regional and national chain trends for a more local, community-driven vibe.

Combining refined, casual coziness with an impressively upscale menu, Executive Chef and Owner Gilbert Garza positions his restaurant as “fine dining just around the corner.” From appetizers to desserts and the salads and entrées in between, the Suze menu features classic Mediterranean flavors mixed with modern Texas flair. The wine list is astutely curated, though the creative specialty cocktails are an enjoyable alternative.

Flattery Cafe

6005 Berkshire Lane, in Preston Center

Every neighborhood requires at least one standout pizza joint. Fortunately for residents living in and around Preston Hollow, they can claim Flattery Cafe, one of the region's best upscale pizza parlors, as their own. Their roster of artisan pizza features a collection of global flavors and styles; everything from blends of Italian to classic New York to even a Texas specialty pie showcasing barbecue pulled pork.

More than just brilliantly crafted pizza, Flattery Cafe adds a bit of whimsy to its menu, offering gourmet hot dogs and a variety of gyros. Offering the right mix of classy and casual, the cafe dining room is small and cozy for those wanting an Artisan fresh from the oven. Otherwise, at the corner of Douglas Avenue and Berkshire Lane, the Preston Center location is ideal for fast carryout.

Bernie's at Preston Tower

6211 West Northwest Highway, on the first floor of Preston Tower

Bernie's at Preston Tower is the ideal landing spot before or after dinner at any restaurant mentioned above. But this isn't your typical modern-day bar.

Since its opening just a few years ago, Bernie's offers visitors an intimate, moody experience — an old-school sense of swank from a less fussy era. It's opulent but with a low-key atmosphere, where visitors can relax, enjoy a conversation, and sip on high-end cocktails. There's also a sense of welcome whimsy, as Bernie's considers itself a private club, and to become a member, all one needs to do is swipe a driver's license. If you find yourself a bit peckish, small bites are available in the form of flatbread pizza.
